Finding Stripped Threads

The original and the new head. The valve cover, exhaust and water pipe bolts, one on each attachment were messed up, a imperial bolt was forced into the hole, then a lot of silicone was used to try and make a good seal. So much silicone that it clogged the breather tube.

The new head cleaned, leveled and ready for installation.

Learing As I Go

The more I remove the more questions that arise. I have a running list of parts to buy and have been getting lucky finding them on eBay. This bike has very low mileage but it has been a rough journey.

Removed the windshield, rear rack, crash guard, now to removing of the air box and relocating the wiring
Removing the Airbox
How does this thig come out?

Got the airbox out finally, now on to this mess of wires,

Working on the Rear Wheel

Wondering if I can machine off the edge of this rim? I need to take it off so the rim will clear the dust guard on the drive assembly. Just wondering if I did so would it weaken the rim. The other side of the rim does not have this edge.

Looking at the spacing of the rear wheel here in this photo you can see it is not centered. I may have to re-dish the wheel.

Here are the two wheel centers, the stock one and one off a 1975 GL1000 they do infact have the same drive gear spline. But as you can see from above they do not fit with out the need of modifying them.

Cleaning & Learning

Last night I started looking over the bike gave it a good washing and started to notice a few buggered things. I guess riding the bike around the ranch too its toll. A lot of not original bolts and screws. Sad thing the screws that replaced most of the were not metric. He just used what was close and forced them in. I have a bit of welding and re-taping to do. But that is was is expected with a 33 year old bike from a farm.

Bringing Her Home

Add caption
I just picked up a 80 CX500 with 10,112 mile on the clock, it is a pretty clean bike one owner, 82 year old could/would no longer ride it. Did not have the heart to tell him I was going to chop it and make it a Café Racer. That said riding it home today it had a knocking in the engine and the oil seals need replacing. I needed a cheap bike to start with, this bike fit the bill. Let the chopping begin.
